Alation Data Catalog

Alation describes a searchable data catalog combining metadata, business context and lineage.

01 / CONTEXT & SCOPE

Understand the proposition.
Define the boundary.

The decision to make

Evaluate whether a consumer can find and correctly interpret the right dataset. Search results are only the beginning: the person needs a definition, an accountable owner, an appropriate freshness signal and a way to understand downstream consequences before using the asset.

What this record does not establish

A searchable catalog with business context and lineage is not evidence that every asset is documented, that a recommendation is correct or that a consumer has permission to use the data.

1 current source · 1 published assertion
Source coverage is a research boundary, not a quality score.

02 / YOUR EVALUATION

Turn interest into a useful trial.

A

A test worth running

Give a new user a business question involving two similarly named datasets. Observe which evidence helps them choose, then change an upstream field and inspect the lineage and ownership context. Include an asset with incomplete metadata so the trial reveals how uncertainty is communicated.

B

Evidence to bring back

  1. Retain the source, owner and last-update context supporting a dataset selection.
  2. Distinguish a catalog's description of access conditions from an enforcement action in the data platform.

03 / DOCUMENTED EVIDENCE

Read the claim. Inspect the basis.

Each statement retains its classification and preserved source. A vendor assertion is not an independent test result.

04 / BEFORE YOU COMMIT

Better questions.
A clearer decision.

Resolve these with the provider and your own evaluation team.

01

Which lineage is collected automatically and which requires manual curation?

02

What deployment, retention and access-control evidence supports the intended use?

03

What underlying assurance documents are available, and which claims remain unverified?

Regulatory applicability requires a separate, current determination. Inclusion is not certification.

KEEP THE RECORD USEFUL

A dossier should stand up to scrutiny.
