LangSmith

LangChain describes LangSmith tracing and monitoring for model calls, tool activity, latency, cost and online evaluations.

01 / CONTEXT & SCOPE

Understand the proposition.
Define the boundary.

The decision to make

Start with the operational question a trace needs to answer: what failed, which version ran and who should investigate. Online evaluations can surface cases for review, while a controlled offline comparison is better suited to deciding whether a proposed change improves known behavior.

What this record does not establish

The captured description supports tracing, monitoring and online-evaluation topics. It does not establish automatic release safety, metric accuracy, hosting scope or complete coverage of custom application code.

Source coverage is a research boundary, not a quality score.

02 / YOUR EVALUATION

Turn interest into a useful trial.

Open the evaluation playbook ↗
A

A test worth running

Trace a multi-step application with a deliberately failing tool, then connect the failing case to a repeatable evaluation. Compare a changed prompt on fixed inputs and inspect how latency, cost and scoring results are represented without allowing one aggregate number to conceal a critical failure.

GovernAtlas editorial proposal. We have not performed this test.

B

Evidence to bring back

  1. Follow a failed user interaction through its model and tool steps to the precise application version.
  2. Keep operational monitoring results distinct from a controlled experiment used to authorize a release.

03 / DOCUMENTED EVIDENCE

Read the claim. Inspect the basis.

Each statement retains its classification and preserved source. A vendor assertion is not an independent test result.

04 / BEFORE YOU COMMIT

Better questions.
A clearer decision.

Resolve these with the provider and your own evaluation team.

01

Which tracing capabilities and storage locations depend on the selected deployment and plan?

02

What deployment, retention and access-control evidence supports the intended use?

03

What underlying assurance documents are available, and which claims remain unverified?

Regulatory applicability requires a separate, current determination. Inclusion is not certification.

KEEP THE RECORD USEFUL
