MLflow

MLflow project documentation describes tracing prompts, retrievals and tool calls, evaluation using judges or custom scorers, prompt management and version tracking for LLM applications and agents. The project documentation is first-party evidence; managed MLflow services have separate deployment and service terms.

01 / CONTEXT & SCOPE

Understand the proposition.
Define the boundary.

The decision to make

Evaluate MLflow as a project-based engineering choice with explicit responsibility for hosting and operating it. Start with the release decision the team needs to explain: which application and prompt version was evaluated, against which dataset and scoring configuration, and why the result justified proceeding. A trace browser alone does not answer that question.

What this record does not establish

The reviewed evidence is first-party project documentation, not independent verification. Managed MLflow services have separate features and service terms. Do not assume an open-source installation inherits hosted authentication, retention, support or availability arrangements; document the operator's responsibilities and sensitive trace-data controls.

02 / YOUR EVALUATION

Turn interest into a useful trial.

A

A test worth running

Run a proposed trial with a small labeled evaluation set and two prompt versions. Include a retrieval failure, an incorrect tool argument and a correct answer reached through an unauthorized action. Inspect traces alongside scorer outputs, calibrate judge disagreements with a human reviewer and verify that the release record preserves the dataset, code, prompt and scorer versions.

B

Evidence to bring back

  1. A reproducible evaluation record linking dataset, application, prompt and scorer versions to item-level results and human review.
  2. An operating plan for the chosen deployment covering access, trace redaction, retention, backups and upgrades.

03 / DOCUMENTED EVIDENCE

Read the claim. Inspect the basis.

Each statement retains its classification and preserved source. A vendor assertion is not an independent test result.

04 / BEFORE YOU COMMIT

Better questions.
A clearer decision.

Resolve these with the provider and your own evaluation team.

01

Which open-source release and operating responsibilities are being evaluated, and what depends on a managed service?

02

Can a controlled failure be traced to its source, version, owner and reviewed resolution?

03

Which access, retention, export and deletion evidence applies to the proposed environment?

Regulatory applicability requires a separate, current determination. Inclusion is not certification.

KEEP THE RECORD USEFUL
