OpenAI Evals Framework

The OpenAI Evals repository documents a framework for evaluating LLMs and LLM systems and an open-source registry of benchmarks.

01 / CONTEXT & SCOPE

Understand the proposition.
Define the boundary.

The decision to make

Decide whether you need the repository framework or a separately provided hosted evaluation service. This record covers the open-source framework and benchmark registry. Pin the dataset, template and completion-function configuration, and confirm that a score measures your application behavior rather than familiarity with a public benchmark.

What this record does not establish

Repository scope only: no equivalence to hosted evaluation APIs, ChatGPT product features or production assurance. Public benchmark results cannot establish application-specific readiness; no model calls were executed here.

02 / YOUR EVALUATION

Turn interest into a useful trial.

A

A test worth running

Construct a tiny synthetic task with an exact expected identifier, an ambiguous answer and an unavailable inference response. Compare two completion configurations while retaining item-level outputs and failures. Keep any paid inference calls and data handling outside the directory review itself.

GovernAtlas editorial proposal. We have not performed this test.

B

Evidence to bring back

  1. A framework/dataset/template revision and completion-function manifest.
  2. Item-level outcomes with ambiguous and failed executions retained separately.

03 / DOCUMENTED EVIDENCE

Read the claim. Inspect the basis.

Each statement retains its classification and preserved source. A vendor assertion is not an independent test result.

04 / BEFORE YOU COMMIT

Better questions.
A clearer decision.

Resolve these with the provider and your own evaluation team.

01

Can you provide a framework/dataset/template revision and completion-function manifest for the selected configuration?

02

Can you provide item-level outcomes with ambiguous and failed executions retained separately for the selected configuration?

03

Which exact version, entitlements, data paths and responsible roles apply?

Regulatory applicability requires a separate, current determination. Inclusion is not certification.
